VALLEY CITY, ND  (NewsDakota.com)  Hi-Liner Athletics has announced two hires as head coaches.

Travis Engen has been hired as the new Hi-Liner head football coach, filling the position after the resignation of Scott Roehrich.  Engen is a health and physical education teacher at Valley City High School, and has 18 years coaching experience.  He was recently added to the Hi-Liner coaching staff, and was considered by some to be the “heir apparent” for Roehrich.

In a statement, the hiring committee wrote, “Travis stood out among in the interview process for the pieces that are not really on paper. Who he is as a person and the inspired leadership that he brings to the team. He will develop our kids on and off the field, and he’ll foster a culture that promotes character and integrity while being tough.”

Mark Mattson has been hired as the head softball coach for the Hi-Liners.  Mattson is a behavioral specialist at Jefferson Elementary School.  He has 23 years of collegiate coaching experience, and two at the high school level.

The committee said of Mattson, “Mark brings years of experience and an established track record of improvement. We are excited tosee a player lead program founded in character development and are thrilled for him to take on this new role.”
