Fishing for walleyes remains best during low-light hours and when the clouds roll in over Devils Lake. DEO Photo by Mike Peluso

We have been lucky with the weather lately here in North Dakota and I probably jinxed it for everyone, but honestly, it’s been pretty darn good.

We still have a lot of snow and slush we are battling on a daily basis and it’s now just part of the game this season on Devils Lake. I know I have recommended using tracked vehicles to access the lake, and to clarify it’s not just recommended, it’s a must! Another thing I would say is travel in groups to help each other out. One slush pocket and your day could be over. Strength in numbers!

Aside from the difficult conditions, the fishing is still pretty good. Both walleyes and perch are biting when conditions are right. When the sun’s out go perch fishing and when the clouds move in go walleye fishing. Certain areas with the slush are out of play until we get a hard cold snap.

So overall, just go slow, be careful and have good friend nearby. Otherwise hire a guide! I do have some February dates available.
