EDGLEY, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornado girls took down the Edgley/Kulm/Montpellier Rebels in an intense matchup on Tuesday January 3rd. The final score was 50-44.
The game was close from start to finish. The Tornadoes would jump to an early lead then the Rebels would fight back to tie and take a little lead which would be countered immediately by the Tornadoes. This trend would continue throughout the game with neither side able to get a true knock out blow.
The Tornadoes early struggled in moving the ball down the court with Mataeya Mathern picking up steal after steal. The defense however prevented most points off of the turnover allowing the Tornadoes to lead 19-17 at the half.
The second half saw the teams continue to be close the entire time with the score tied 32-32 after 3 quarters. The Tornadoes were being led by Lily Thorpe who would end the night with 19 points scoring 6 in the 3rd quarter.
The game would be close late in the 4th quarter with the Tornadoes leading 46-44 with 22 seconds left with EKM controling on an inbound at half court. Kiara Jangula would get the ball and look over to Mataeya Mathern to pass it to her. However Mathern was unaware of the pass until it was too late resulting in the ball going out of play allowing the Tornadoes to secure the victory.
Lily Thorpe was named the Bank North Player of the Game with 19 points on the night.
The Tornadoes are now 2-0 in District 5 play and 4-1 overall. They next play Aberdeen Christian, SD on January 5th.
