Karolina Wegenast, 98, of Edgeley, ND, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Manor St. Joseph, Edgeley.

Karolina Welder was born May 18, 1924 in Napoleon, ND, to Valentine and Clara (Glatt) Welder. The family moved to Edgeley, ND in 1934. After high school she completed a business course at Matchie Business College and used what she learned to work for Bridgeman Russell Creamery in Jamestown and later for the Edgeley Community Creamery.

She married Marvin Wegenast on October 15, 1946. Together they raised four daughters on the farm they operated for 22 years. After leaving the farm, they owned and operated the Tastee Freeze followed by a painting and decorating business.

Karolina was known for her hospitality regularly inviting family and friends for casual and holiday meals. She passed her love of cooking and baking to her girls. She enjoyed working with young people. As a 4-H leader, along with cooking and baking, she taught many girls to sew, display gardening projects, develop public speaking and demonstration skills that took them all the way to state competitions. She worked for many years at Manor St. Joseph as a nurse’s aide and housekeeper, so it was a natural place for her to live after moving from her home.

She is survived by her four daughters, Theresa Paul of Edgeley, Clara Sylvester of Sioux Falls, SD, Patty Holt of Vancouver, WA and Boni Wegenast and her husband Kit Dohrman of Berlin, ND as well as her four grandchildren: Adam, Joel, Paul Sylvester and Amy Robb; four great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Tony, Addison, and Dawson Sylvester. She leaves behind three siblings: Betty McIntyre, Delane Scallon, and Valentine Welder, Jr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; two sons-in-law, Don Paul and Ed Holt and seven siblings.
