(NewsDakota.com) – Four different Hi-Liners scored in double figures as Valley City’s girls basketball team beat Wahpeton in an instant classic, 83-78 in double overtime.
It was the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon in Wahpeton, and neither team wanted to throw in the towel. Valley City led 59-55 in the final minute of regulation, but Wahpeton rallied to force overtime at 59-59.
Jessica Denholm twice hit 3’s in the first overtime to give Valley City leads.
Her shots helped the Hi-Liners to a 71-68 lead with 7 seconds left in the first overtime, but Lachelle Bumgarner hit a 3 at the buzzer to force double overtime.
Down the stretch in the second overtime Valley City was able to put it away for good. A basket by Mariah Olstad with 25 seconds to go and four straight free throws from Clarissa Olson and Danica Diegel sealed the game.
Bumgarner scored 38 points for Wahpeton, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the balanced attack of Valley City. Unofficially, Jessica Denholm finished with 20 points to lead Valley City, including two big 3-pointers in the first overtime. Dierra Diegel scored 14 points, all coming in the second half and overtime. Clarissa Olson went off for 18 and Mariah Olstad scored 14 points in the victory.
Valley City improves to 1-0 on the season. The victory was worth one point in the EDC standings. The Hi-Liners are now off for about a week and a half before hosting Maple Valley on Dec. 17. That game will be broadcast on KOVC 1490.
