NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The roof of the New Rockford, North Dakota’s downtown movie theater collapsed early Monday from what appears to have been the weight of the snow and it will be closed indefinitely.

According to a release from the city, there were no injuries but people were told to keep a distance and stay outside the barricades as the theater building is unstable and more bricks or structural elements could fall. The National Weather Service said about 11 inches of snow fell in New Rockford last week.

The North Dakota Film Society, a group of filmmakers, educators, journalists, and cinema owners, is asking North Dakota’s cinema lovers to help preserve the Rockford Theater, which many call a “precious piece of cinema history.” The organization has launched a GoFundMe page to help cover costs associated with the theatre being closed and the hope repairs can be made to reopen the cinema.

Donations can also be sent to Forward Bank in New Rockford.
