VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) Despite early momentum from hot three-point shooting, turnovers and a hot Devils Lake shooting night undid Valley City in the Hi-Liner boys basketball opener Tuesday night.
Devils Lake topped Valley City 85-64 to open Eastern Dakota Conference (EDC) play for both squads, with the Firebirds evening their overall mark at 1-1, and the Hi-Liners falling to 0-1 to start the season.
Six first-half three-point shots kept Valley City in the game, as they responded to an 8-0 Firebird run to start the matchup with eight of their own. But a 13-0 half-closing run by Devils Lake blocked out a 37-32 Hi-Liner lead, with the Firebirds leading 45-37 at the break.
From there, Firebird sophomore guard Parker Brodina did damage, scoring 18 in the second half after a 17-point first half. He finished with 35 on seven three-point shots and 14 field goals.
Calahan Burchill led Valley City with 15, while Zach Sykora tallied 14, earning Ivy Real Estate Group Player of the Game honors.
Valley City plays at Wahpeton Friday night.
