FREMONT, Neb. (jimmiepride.com)– The University of Jamestown women’s basketball team outscored Midland University 41-26 in the second half to come away with a 75-61 win Saturday evening at Wikert Event Center.
Jamestown (5-1, 3-0 GPAC) won its third straight game and will play at Concordia (Neb.) Tuesday. Midland falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC.
Hannah DeMars (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) scored 15 of her game-high 26 points in the second half and was joined in double figures by Kia Tower (SR/Bigfork, MN) with 16 and Kate Cordes (FR/Shakopee, MN) with 15.
Midland led 17-15 after the first quarter and scored the first six points of the second for their biggest lead of the half. Tower and DeMars combined for 11 of UJ’s final 13 points in the second, helping the Jimmies trim the deficit to just one going into the break.
A Tower three-pointer brought Jamestown level at 39-39 with 8:18 left in the third, and after the Warriors made a pair of free throws to retake the lead, DeMars made a three to put the Jimmies ahead by one. The teams would trade leads before Cordes swished home a three-pointer to start an 8-2 run that gave UJ a 52-47 edge entering the fourth.
Cordes, Tower, and DeMars shot a combined 7-for-8 overall and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in the final period, and the Jimmies hit 67 percent as a team to close out the win. The Warriors got as close as 54-51, but on UJ’s next trip down the floor, Cordes hit a three to start a 15-2 run that put the game away.
DeMars pulled down eight rebounds while Kate Busek (SO/Fargo, ND) grabbed seven boards and dished out six assists. UJ outrebounded Midland 37-21 while outshooting them .537 to .418. Jamestown also made 12 threes and had a 30-24 advantage in points off the bench.
