VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – On Tuesday, October 11th, first responders, city police, county deputies and Valley City State University (VCSU) officials conducted a hands-on exercise to test the response capability in the county of a potential active shooter.

Valley City Police Chief Phil Hatcher said this was the first large scale exercise in the area since he’s served as police chief.

VCSU Marketing Director Tammy Jo Taft said the exercise was held on campus to train facility members in the event of an active shooter.

Event coordinator, Derek Hanson with Heartland Consulting Group said the exercise focused on training first responders to deal with a violent situation during a major incident.

He said theatrical weapons shooting blank bullets added to the realism for a potential active shooter scenario including volunteers with simulated injuries.
