CRETE, Neb. (Jimmiepride.com) — With a 2-nil lead heading into the final twenty minutes, the University of Jamestown men’s soccer team had Doane University on the ropes.
Unfortunately for UJ, the Tigers scored three times in just over 11 minutes to take a 3-2 victory over the Jimmies Saturday afternoon.
Jamestown’s winless streak has now reached six matches (0-5-1) as the team is now 2-7-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the GPAC.
Austin Shafer (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) accounted for both of UJ’s goals, giving him seven on the season. Shafer converted his third penalty kick in as many chances to give the Jimmies the early lead in the 22nd minute. His goal in the 55th minute made it 2-0 and boosted Jamestown’s chances of getting their first conference win.
Jesus Maganda scored in the 73rd minute to make it a one-goal game while giving the Tigers increased optimism. Garrett Scheet drew Doane level on an assist by Jarryd Stone in the 85th, then just 20 seconds later, Brody Mueller drilled home a penalty kick for the go-ahead goal.
A pair of Jimmie attempts in the final minutes went wide and yet another one high, and Doane was able to see off Jamestown and improve to 2-8-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference.
The Tigers outshot UJ 25-18 and had a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal. Jort Ruijssenaars (FR/Zeist, The Netherlands) had 10 saves in goal for Jamestown.
Next up for the Jimmies is a home match against Northwestern (Iowa) College on Saturday at 6 p.m.
