JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – North Dakota is home to 63 Wildlife Refuges, the most of any state in the nation.
During the week of Oct. 8 through the 15, several refuges are encouraging you to Walk for the Wild.
Russell Keys is a volunteer with National Fish & Wildlife.
According to the Public Lands Alliance, Walk for the Wild is scheduled to demonstrate the commitment to deepening human connections with nature and to protect the thriving ecosystems we depend on.
Keys added that these events are set to get members of the public out and enjoy what can be found in their own backyard.
Caleb Christenson is an intern for Whitehorse Hill National Game Preserve. He says anyone can participate in the Walk for the Wild whether it’s at a local refuge or their own backyard.
He added that while it is used as a fundraiser, they simply want to get people out and see what the refuges are and what they do.
The walk can take place anytime during the week of Oct 8-15 or you can follow the 5K signs at White Horse Hill National Game Refuge. You can also walk on Oct. 14 at CrossRoads Golf Course in Carrington from 4-7 PM.
Plans are also being made for a Wildlife Walk at the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge south of Fargo.
Christenson says he encourages you to try to get to a refuge if you can this year.
