Art Conklin

OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Art Conklin, Oakes Public Schools’ Administrator of 30 years, will be inducted into the Oakes Public School Hall of Fame on Monday, September 12 at 7:00 pm.

The induction will be held in the South Gym in conjunction with the coronation of the 2022 Homecoming King and Queen.

Art began his career in Oakes in 1983 as the High School Principal, he became Superintendent in 1990, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 2013. During his tenure at OPS, he spearheaded many projects including the addition of the South Gym, paving of the school parking lot, and he had a vision of adding the connecting link between the elementary and high school, where the new Central Office is now located. With this project he envisioned an extensive library renovation creating a modern and inviting library and media center for both students and the community at large to enjoy.

Mr. Conklin had a passion for technology and brought many high-tech advances to his students and staff. In the mid ‘80s, he created our very first computer lab. In the following years he crawled on his hands and knees through the tunnels under the school pulling wires to connect the computers of OPS to the internet. He also built the very first network for the district, which was one of the first that existed in the state of North Dakota.

With a focus on improving opportunities for students, Art was instrumental in the development of the ITV system, bringing new classes and dual credit college course options to the students of OPS. He saw the critical importance of data management, bringing MacSchool in as the first Student Information System, eventually leading to the development of PowerSchool, which we still use to this day.

Art’s hard work and passion in the world of education and technology did not go unnoticed as he was a highly respected member of many boards including, chairman of the North Dakota Educational Technology Council, chairman of the Sheyenne Valley Special Education Unit, President of NDASA, and former president elect of the NDASSP. In 1996, 2000, and 2003, he was the recipient NDASA Southeast Superintendent of the Year. In 2005, he received the National Tech Savvy Superintendent, and in 2012, he was awarded the Friend of Counseling award by the ND Counseling Association.

After retirement, Mr. Conklin continued his service to the community of Oakes as a City Council member, the Oakes Enhancement Inc. Board President, and Treasurer of the Oakes United Methodist Church.

In 2006, Mr. Conklin created the Oakes Public Schools Hall of Fame with the desire to recognize individuals who have had an impact on the Oakes Public School District. Since it’s inception 23 individuals have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, without a doubt Art Conklin has made an incredible impact on Oakes Public Schools and we cannot think of anyone so very much deserving of this acknowledgment.

A reception will be held in Art’s honor in the OPS Concessions Area prior to the ceremony beginning at 5:30. Anyone wishing to celebrate his service to the community are encouraged to attend.
