Rick Bohn captured a potentially dangerous algal bloom four miles North of Crystal Springs on Aug. 13
CRYSTAL SPRINGS, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Someone has reported a potentially harmful algal bloom in Barnes Lake.
According to the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ), a bloom was reported on Aug. 14. Rick Bohn has also reported a possibly dangerous bloom four miles North of Crystal Springs, as shown in the image above.
While nothing has been confirmed or investigated at this time, the NDDEQ encourages the public to remain cautious.
“Blooms under this classification have been reported to the NDDEQ, and have either not been investigated by an employee of the department or are awaiting sample results to determine the level of toxicity and the appropriate re-classification for the waterbody,” the department states. “Individuals should be cautious of these waterbodies and stay tuned for potential advisory/warning assignments.”
The NDDEQ has fielded several reports of harmful algae in area lakes. These reports have found low toxin levels in Lake No. 5 in Kidder County, Reule Lake in Stutsman County, and the Jamestown Reservoir.
