GRAND FORKS (Newsdakota.com) – A crosstown rivalry collided in the state title game for the second straight year Friday night in Grand Forks, and for the second straight year the Bismarck Demons came home with bragging rights.
A dominating defensive effort and a huge night from running back Layne Johs were the stories as Bismarck defeated rival Bismarck Century 21-0 during the AAA State Championship at the Alerus Center. The Demons won their second straight title over the Patriots, and claimed their fourth state title in the last five years.
A scoreless struggle early gave way in the second quarter when Demon back Layne Johs bounced a pitch outside and took it 29 yards to the house with 9:35 left in the first half.
Johs would add another score late in the first half, busting a 49-yard score with 2:35 remaining in the half. The extra point would make it 14-0 Bismarck going into the break.
The Demons all but put the game away on the opening drive of the second half, using up 8 minutes of clock and capping it with a 2-yard TD run from Johs on 4th and goal. That score made it 21-0 and the Demons coasted from there to another state title.
The Demon defense was dominant all game and held Century to just 27 total yards in the first half and 79 for the entire game.
Johs finished with 143 rushing yards in the first half alone and 199 total in the game.
