FORKS (NewsDakota.com) The nine man football championship did not feature the same style that was seen in this year’s Class A matchup or even the entirety of last year’s nine man game.

In the end however, the big plays for the New Rockford/Sheyenne Rockets were enough to secure a 40-22 victory over the Divide County Maroons on Friday afternoon to capture the 2012 championship and cap a perfect season.

The first quarter saw both teams throw haymakers at each other with big plays for both sides. Divide County threw the first blow with a 95 yard touchdown run by Isaac Jacobs, a Dakota Bowl record for longest single play from scrimmage. However, on the ensuing kickoff, NRS answered by returning the
kickoff 72 yards by Jacob Obenchain. The Maroons would also have a 76 yard kickoff return for a score by Jacobs later in the first quarter.

In the second half, the dramatics were fewer and further between, however NRS was able to score on a 88 yard run by Alex Perleberg to end the third quarter and in the fourth had two touchdowns in the latter parts of the fourth quarter, one on an interception return for a score, to seal the deal.

Each team finished with roughly the same amount of total offensive yards 385 for NRS and 368 for Divide County. Jacobs finished with five carries for 99 yards and a score for DC, and Josh Edmonson had 22 carries for 179 yards and two scores.

NRS ends their Championship season with a perfect 14-0 record, while Divide County finishes at 14-1.
