N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – American Red Cross volunteers continue their efforts in the East Coast’s Hurricane Sandy relief, including one particular group of North Dakotans from Jamestown and Dickinson.
Dave Smette of Jamestown and Melissa Shepherd of Dickinson left from Minot on Oct. 31 driving a Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle and arrived two-and-a-half days later near the coast of New Jersey to assist in feeding thousands that have been displaced or that still do not have power.
Smette says a recent snowstorm on top of what has already devastated much of the area has left anywhere from one-hundred to two-hundred-thousand more homes without power.
The volunteers will be assisting until at least Nov. 17 to meet their minimum Red Cross volunteer requirement, but Buffalo Valley Chapter Executive Director Beth Dewald says they could be out there up to a week longer than that.
