GRAND FORKS, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Hi-Liner softball team was unable to get a win Tuesday afternoon as they fell to Grand Forks Red River by a final score of 8-4.
The Roughriders started the scoring in the first inning with two runs. The Hi-Liners responded with an RBI single from 8th-grade shortstop Kinley Sufficool, which would be the first of her three hits. Red River scored two more runs to grow their lead in the bottom of the third. Valley City answered with one more run in the fourth inning with a sac-fly from senior third baseman Dylann Diegel. Once again with the game in reach for the Hi-Liners, the Roughriders were able to get two more runs to keep Valley City at bay. The Hi-Liners got their first multi-run inning in the fifth with a solo home run from Sufficool and junior outfielder Autumn McGough getting a sac-fly. However, Red River responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away.
Sufficool finished her day 3-for-3 with two RBI along with her solo home run. Sophomore pitcher Sydney Larson was the only other Hi-Liner with a multi-hit day as she finished with two singles in her four at-bats. On the mound, Larson pitched six innings and allowed three walks, six hits, and eight earned runs while picking up the loss.
The Hi-Liners will play on Friday once again at the Apollo Sports Complex in Grand Forks versus Devil’s Lake at approximately 1:00 p.m. or 30 minutes after the first game of the day concludes.
