MEDINA, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Firefighters never know what to expect, so the next best thing is to prepare for anything and expect the unexpected.

The Medina Fire District spent some time earlier this week maintaining some of their equipment and units as they prepare for the upcoming summer. Captain Jahleel Opp says recertified equipment also needed to be addressed.

While a majority of the state worked through summer drought conditions and multiple grass fires, Captain Opp says they had what he’d call a “slower” year.

He added they have a full roster of younger guys who are ready and available, but the challenge they face is a good portion of them are farmers and ranchers.

In most cases, Captain Opp says they can rely on surrounding services to provide help if needed and vice versa.

Opp added the best thing the public can do to help cut down on fires this summer is be aware and be cautious.
