REDFIELD, S.D.– A change of venue did not affect the University of Jamestown baseball team Friday, as they took a pair of games from Northwestern (Iowa) College 7-0 and 6-3.
Trei Hough (SO/Pocatello, ID) (4-1) pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener as Jamestown took game one 7-0. It was the first complete game of the season by a Jimmie pitcher, and the game took just one hour and 45 minutes.
Tayler Cullen (SR/Santa Rosa, Calif.)’s home run in the bottom of the second and Triston Madison (FR/Spokane, WA)’s two-out single in the bottom of the fourth gave UJ a 2-0 lead, and Hough made those runs hold up. He allowed just a bunt single in the third and a single to left in the fourth through six innings.
The sixth inning saw Jamestown break the game open with five runs, making it 7-0 by the time the third out was recorded. Madison and Xander Orejudos (JR/Ellensburg, WA) each hit two-run doubles, and Quade Peters (FR/West Fargo, ND) doubled in a run as four of the six Jimmie hits in the inning went for two bases.
Cullen, Madison, and Julian Sansores (SO/Bellflower, CA) all had two hits for Jamestown.
In game two, Northwestern put three runs on the board in the top of the second to take the first lead. The Jimmies scored one in both the second and third innings, then tied the game on an RBI double by Isaiah Roebuck (FR/Marana, AZ).
Jamestown took the lead in the bottom of the eighth after Kendall Yackley (JR/Lynnwood, WA) was intentionally walked to load the bases. With two out, Tanner Shepard (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) singled to center, scoring Yackley, but a throwing error by the Northwestern centerfielder also allowed Blake Arritola (JR/Salem, OR) and Austin Shirley (JR/Idaho Falls, ID) to score, making it 6-3.
Hayden Brown (JR/Buckeye, AZ) recorded the final three outs for his second save, with Eric Kessler (FR/Dallas, OR) (2-2) getting the win in relief. Payson Mills (JR/Blackfoot, ID) started and went four innings, giving up three runs on six hits but did not figure in the decision. Ben Ray (JR/Federal Way, WA), Cameron Multer (SO/Greeley, CO), Kessler, and Brown combined for five innings of scoreless relief, allowing only two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Shepard finished 3-for-5 and Roebuck was 2-for-4.
Jamestown improves to 22-21 overall (11-11 GPAC) and will play Midland (Neb.) University on Saturday in Mitchell, S.D., beginning at 2 p.m.
