Jimmies Split With OUAZ on Friday

TUCSON, Ariz. (jimmiepride.com)– Holding a slim 6-5 lead going into the final inning, the University of Jamestown baseball team struck for seven runs in their last at-bat in a 13-6 win over Ottawa University (Ariz.) in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader.

UJ led 3-0 after three innnings with Tayler Cullen (SR/Santa Rosa, Calif.), Quade Peters (FR/West Fargo, ND), and Luke Shekeryk (SR/Seattle, WA) each driving in a run. OUAZ got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a single run, which Jamestown responded to in the top of the fifth courtesy of a Tanner Shepard (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) single.

Andrew Kupec (SO/Peoria, AZ) and Xander Orejudos (JR/Ellensburg, WA) had RBIs in the top of the sixth that gave the Jimmies a 6-1 lead. OUAZ made it a one-run game after scoring four times in the bottom of the sixth.

Jamestown had only two hits in the top of the seventh, a bases-clearing double by Orejudos and a triple by Shepard, but scored a pair of runs on an error and another on a ground out to take a 13-5 lead. OUAZ added one in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Payson Mills (JR/Blackfoot, ID) struck out six over 5 2/3 innings to get the win. Orejudos, Shepard, and Shekeryk all had two hits.

OUAZ plated five first-inning runs in game two, then another in the second to lead 6-0.

Jamestown scored twice with Tanner Shepard‘s sixth-inning single making it 6-2. OUAZ added another run in the seventh to lead by five going into the Jimmies’ last at-bat. Ryan Muizelaar (FR/Grand Forks, ND) and Andrew Kupec drove in runs as UJ tried to mount a comeback, but ended the game with runners on first and third.

Seven Jimmies each had a hit, including a double by Hayden Brown (JR/Buckeye, AZ). Julian Sansores (SO/Bellflower, CA) and Ben Ray (JR/Federal Way, WA) combined to pitch the final four innings in relief, giving up one run on four hits and striking out four.

Jamestown (10-9) finishes their Arizona trip Saturday with an 11 a.m. game against Southwest Minnesota State and a 3 p.m. game against Wesleyan University.
