JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)–The Loboes of LaMoure-LM defeated the Ellendale Cardinals 61-48 to win the District 5 boys basketball title and Carrington and Griggs County-Midkota both advanced to the Region 3 tournament with victories over EKM and Oakes. Carrington ended EKM (defending Region 3 champion), season and Griggs County-Midkota knocked off Oakes to reach the Region3 tournament.
Region Qualifier: Griggs-Midkota 63, Oakes 54
The sixth-seeded Griggs-Midkota Titans advanced to the Region 3 Tournament after defeating Oakes in the first game of the day. Griggs-Midkota’s offense exploded in the second quarter for 25 points, but was held to just four point in the third quarter. Fortunately for them, they were able to hold the Tornadoes to just nine points and kept ahold of their lead. Carter Spitzer had another efficient game with 17 points and shot 5/6 from the floor and 3/3 behind the arc. Jaxon Gronneberg had 13 points and six rebounds and Brady Haugen added 13 points. Noah Sundby and Trey Skoglund both led Oakes in scoring with 13 points and Eddie Garza added 11 points off the bench. Griggs-Midkota will be the three seed from District 5.
Region Qualifier: Carrington 58, Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 34
It was a pretty even first half with the Cardinals leading by six points. In the third quarter, the Rebels’ offense came out flat scoring just four points and making only one field goal. Meanwhile, Carrington added 21 points to separate themselves and seal their spot in the Region 3 Tournament. Lucas Hendrickson led all scorers with 15 points shooting 6/11 from the floor. Grady Shipman also finished with 12 points shooting 5/7 on the night. Jacob Nitschke led Rebels scoring with 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Carrington will be the four seed from District 5.
District 5 Championship: LaMoure-LM 61 Ellendale 48
The Loboes balanced offensive attack offset the big night from Ellendale’s 6’7 senior center Scott Wagner, who poured in a game high 28 points and 13 rebounds. The Loboes were paced by sophomore Max Musland with 18 points on 5 of 8 shooting, which included four three-pointers that sparked the offense in the first half. Musland finished with 5 rebounds as well. Senior Corban Potts added 17 points and Colton Ness added 11 points and a team high 9 rebounds to aid the Loboe victory. Senior guard Charlie Bowman added 9 points, a game high 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and had only 1 turnover as the primary ball handler for LaMoure. Ellendale’s Wagner finished the night connecting on 11 of 14 shots and 6 of 8 from the free throw line for his 28 points. Anton Geller added 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting. The Cardinals made a meager 2 of 19 shots from outside the arc and committed 14 turnovers (5 in the final quarter). Ellendale had a 25-24 halftime lead but the Loboes controlled the second half outscoring the Cardinals 37-23. Ellendale, ranked fifth in the final class B poll dropped to 18-2 overall and the Loboes, ranked ninth in the poll improved to 19-3 overall.
