ABERDEEN, S.D. (jimmiepride.com) — Kat Miska (SR/Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and Hailey Schaefer (FR/Valley City, N.D.) combined for a no-hitter as the University of Jamestown softball team defeated Mayville State (N.D.) University 7-0 Friday morning at the Presentation College Dome Tournament.

Miska was in her All-American form from the start, striking out all 12 batters she faced and throwing 39 of her 51 pitches for strikes. Schaefer came on in relief in the fifth inning and fanned the first two hitters before Ashlyn Tingey flew out to left field, the first ball put in play by the Comets.

With two outs in the seventh, Mayville State finally had a batter reach base as Brooke Roeges drew a walk. Schaefer struck out Jocelyn Ontiveros to end the game and preserve the 13th no-hitter in Jimmie program history. It was the second combined no-hitter by UJ, with the first coming on February 10, 2018 by Brittany Rheault and Toree Rensmon against Presentation (S.D.). Miska has thrown the last two complete game no-hitters, most recently February 20, 2021 against Dickinson State (N.D.)

With two out in the bottom of the first, Molly Haley (SO/Atwater, Calif.) delivered a two-run homer to left center and Megan Neiles (SO/Winnipeg, MB) followed with a solo shot to right center as the Jimmies led 3-0.

La La Romero singled home Gracie Fisher (SO/Bemidji, Minn.) and Ally Battistoni (FR/Elizabeth, Colo.) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second to make it 5-0.

Battistoni singled in a run in the fourth and scored on a Gentrey Turin (SO/Sandy, Ore.) single in the sixth to round out the scoring.

Jamestown batters combined for 12 hits with Romero, Turin, Battistoni, and Katie Reisdorfer (SR/Fresno, Calif.) all chalking up two hits each.

The Jimmies had their five-game winning streak snapped in Friday’s second game, losing 10-6 to Valley City State (N.D.) University.

VCSU plated six runs in the bottom of the first before UJ could record an out. Ally Battistoni got one of the runs back in the top of the second as she reached on a fielder’s choice to score Megan Neiles.

Two more runs in the second and one more in the fourth gave the Vikings a 9-1 lead, and three more outs in the top of the fifth would end the game via the eight-run rule. However, the Jimmies began their comeback.

Gentrey Turin drove in a run with a double, Molly Haley another with a groundout, and Santina Zito (JR/Boise, Idaho) scored on an error as Jamestown found themselves down just 9-4 going into the bottom of the fifth. After reliever Hailey Schaefer retired the Vikings in order, UJ came back in the top of the sixth with two more runs. Zito singled home Turin and La La Romero, and suddenly the Jimmies had the tying run in the on-deck circle.

VCSU added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 10-6. In their final at bat, the Jimmies had runners at second and third with one out, but the Vikings got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

Romero, Turin, and Zito had six of UJ’s eight hits and scored five of the team’s six runs. Katie Reisdorfer and Steph Cota (JR/Tucson, Ariz.) picked up the other two hits.

Jamestown is now 5-2 this season and will play two more games at the PC Dome on Saturday, facing Dickinson State (N.D.) at 4 p.m. and Bellevue (Neb.) at 6 p.m.
