DES MOINES, Iowa (jimmiepride.com)– The sixth-ranked University of Jamestown men’s volleyball team took No. 1 Grand View University to five sets Friday night, but suffered their second loss of the season 26-24, 29-27, 22-25, 23-25, 15-11.

Ahead 13-11 in set one, the Vikings took the next four points to open a six-point edge. The Jimmies came back and won ten of the next 14 points to draw even at 21-21. The teams went back and forth until Grand View won the final two points for a 1-0 match lead.

Jamestown led 14-10 in the second set after a Korben Phillips (FR/Western, Australia) kill, then again led by four at 18-14. The Vikings gradually began to trim the UJ lead, and would tie the set at 21. Both sides traded points until Grand View went ahead 28-27, then used a service ace to take the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

With their backs against the wall, the Jimmies came out strong in the third set. UJ took 10 of the first 14 points and later stretched their lead to six. Grand View closed within 20-18 and Jamestown called timeout. Out of the timeout, the Jimmies went ahead 21-18 on a service error. Phillips put Jamestown at set point with a kill to make it 24-20, then two points later, a Grand View serving error ended the set in favor of UJ.

Set four saw the Jimmies ahead by a score of 10-4, but the Vikings caught fire and went in front 22-18. Samuel Jackman (JR/St. Jean Baptiste, Manitoba) and Austin Jacob (SO/Houston, Texas) kills along with blocks by Jacob and Phillips made it 22-22. UJ won three of the last four points and was even in the match at 2-2.

In the fifth set race to 15, it was Jamestown with the early advantage (5-4), but a 6-0 run by Grand View turned the momentum. UJ wouldn’t get any closer than three points before a serving error sealed the deal.

Jackman posted a double-double of 20 kills and 11 digs. Tanner Woods (SO/Huntington Beach, Calif.) was next with 16 kills, followed by Phillips with 9. Jacob passed out 45 assists and had four digs. Caylor Cox (SO/Helena, Mont.) recorded five aces and seven digs. Phillips led the defense with five total blocks while Jacob had four, including a pair of solo blocks along with Ever Cancel (SO/Mayaguez, Puerto Rico).

Jamestown is now 7-2 on the year and will host Central Christian College (Kan.) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
