ABERDEEN, S.D. (VCSUAthletics.com) – The Valley City State softball team picked up a pair of wins Friday with a sweep of Mount Marty and (RV)University of Jamestown at the Presentation College Dome.

VCSU defeated Mount Marty 5-1 in the Lancers’ season-opener and followed with a 10-6 victory over University of Jamestown, who is in the receiving votes category after the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll. It is the second time VCSU has defeated the Jimmies this season as Jamestown falls to 5-2 overall.

Jessica HusbandAndrea Rodriguez and Riley Perryman each homered Friday to help lift the Vikings to a 5-5 overall record this season. VCSU is back in action for two more games on Saturday at the Presentation College Dome. The Vikings are scheduled to play Dakota Wesleyan at 10 a.m. and Minnesota State University-Moorhead at 6 p.m.

VCSU 5, Mount Marty 1
Riley Perryman blasted a 2-run home run in the first inning to put the Vikings on the board early en route to a 5-1 victory over Mount Marty Friday morning. Joelle Aiello later scored Andrea Rodriguez in the fourth inning, and Rodriguez added solo homer in the sixth inning to lead 4-0.

The Lancers broke their scoring drought in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run by Abigail Page. Jessica Husband then scored pinch runner Ashlynne Copinga with an RBI double in the top of the seventh to round out scoring in the game.

Joelle Lamontagne got the win in the circle after pitching a complete game while allowing just one run on five hits and striking out 10. She did not walk a batter in the game. Mount Marty’s Maureena Vornhagen got the loss after starting in the circle and allowing three runs on three hits while walking three batters and striking out six.

Riley Perryman went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs, and Andrea Rodriguez had a home run and scored two runs for the Vikings. Joelle Aiello and Jessica Husband each went 2-for-4 and each contributed an RBI.

VCSU 10, (RV)University of Jamestown 6
The Vikings picked up another big win over rival Jamestown in the second game of the day. VCSU drove in six runs in the first inning to build an early lead, including a 3-run homer from Jessica Husband.

Husband and Sierra Crocker each drove in a run in the second inning to widen the gap to 8-1 after two innings. Then in the fourth inning, a double from Michelle Krahn scored Ashlynne Copinga to make it 9-1.

The Jimmies went on to score three runs in the fifth inning, and an infield single from Santina Zito scored two runs in the sixth to close the gap to 9-6. A sac fly from Husband in the bottom of the inning gave the Vikings the final run to lock in the 10-6 victory.

Brooke Gaudry started in the circle and picked up the win after 5 innings of work while allowing four runs on five hits, walking six and striking out one. Marissa Hawkins pitched two innings in relief and allowed two runs on three hits, walked two and struck out three.

Jamestown’s Katie Merchant got the loss after allowing six runs on four hits and walked two. Maddy Zander pitched 1.2 innings and Hailey Schaefer pitched 4 innings in relief. They each allowed two runs and stuck out two batters apiece.

Jessica Husband powered the Vikings while going 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and five RBIs. Hawkins also went 3-for-3, scored two runs and drove in one. Sierra CrockerAndrea Rodriguez and Michelle Krahn each added an RBI for the Vikings.

Jamestown’s Santina Zito went 2-for-3, scored one run and drove in two. Gentrey Turin had two doubles and an RBI for the Jimmies.
