WAHPETON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Both Hi-Liners basketball teams were on the road on Tuesday night looking to forget about their losses on Saturday and get into the win column. Unfortunately for both Hi-Liner teams that did not happen on this night. The boys lost 57-41. The girls team followed that up with a 88-75 loss.
Boys: Wahpeton 57 Valley City 41
The boys team, still looking for their first win of the season came out playing their game to start things off. They were physical and getting excellent looks at the basket. Cal Burchill had 8-points in the first half to keep Valley City within striking distance of the Huskies. At the break, Wahpeton had the 22-19 lead. In the second half the Hi-Liners came right out and scored the first 4-points to take the 23-22 lead. Caden Hockert wouldn’t waste anytime for the Huskies, as the next possession he came down and nailed a 3-pointer for Wahpeton to give them the lead back for good. Hi-Liners did their best in the second half to try and get back into the game after the Huskies went on a bit of a run. Zach Sykora with 11-points leading Valley City in this one, played a strong second half and also collected 4 rebounds. With the game winding down, Ethan Manock finished off an alley-oop pass with a slam dunk to get the home crowd going crazy and put the game away for the Huskies. Wahpeton takes this one 57-41.
Girls: Wahpeton 88 Valley City 75
The girls team for Valley City was hoping to avoid the sweep at the hands of the Huskies on this night. It was a close game with the Hi-Liners carrying most of the play the start off the first half. Dylann Diegel had a great first half of the game as she connected on four 3-pointers to finish the half with 12-points. She would finish with five 3-pointers and 15-ppints on the night. However, midway through the first half Wahpeton would go on a 12-0 run to take the 32-19 lead. Valley City did their best to climb back to within 10, but then right at the buzzer Emma Bontjes hit a 3-pointer of her own to give the Huskies the 46-33 lead at the break. Second half saw the Hi-Liners come out and go on a 5-0 run. A big reason for that was Brooke Eggermont. Eggermont, who finished the game with 17-points, did an outstanding job of making shots all over the offensive zone, especially under the basket. Unfortunately for Valley City, Scout Woods and her 24-points were just too much on this night as the Huskies defend their home court in this game and win over the Hi-Liners 88-75.
Next up, the boys team will play at home on Thursday night when they host Sheyenne. For the girls team, they will play another road game on Thursday night when they travel to take on Grand Forks Central, a team they have beaten once this year.
