CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Foster County Soil Conservation District (FCSCD) is encouraging landowners to think ahead when it comes to standing water management.

While most welcome the warmer temperatures and spring melt, District Manager Dionn Schaff says this should be the time for landowners to start preparing for the “problem areas” of their property when the melt begins.

Schaff says tillage is not encouraged as it increases evaporation and destroys soil moisture, causing compaction and increasing problems for the future.

Schaff added that cover crops will use the excess water. She says letting it evaporate or run off, water would no longer be available for use later in the season.

It’s also helpful when conditions go from wet to dry quickly in the season.

Schaff says for the spring, they’re also seeking help for some needed spring work.

Starting pay is $15 per hour with a Monday through Friday work week. Schaff says they’re also seeking another tractor driver for parttime work to plant grass and cover crop.
