FARGO, N.D. (VCSUAthletics.com) – Valley City State University athletes had eight Top 10 finishes at the large Bison Open this weekend, hosted by North Dakota State University.
The two-day meet featured more than a dozen schools, including three NCAA Division I schools. Valley City State athletes held their own against the tough competition with some strong performances.
Zachary Co placed fifth in the men’s shot put with a throw of 16.97 meters. He was the top NAIA finisher in the field of 37 throwers. JT Reed sprinted to ninth in the 60 meters, clocking a time of 7.08 seconds as the top NAIA athlete in the field.
Brooke Malsom jumped a season-best 5.31 meters in the long jump, placing 11th out of 29 athletes. That distance is the top jump in the North Star Athletic Association this season.
Jayden Gerringer finished ninth in high jump, clearing 1.82 meters. Luis Garcia was 10th out of 22 runners in the 800 meters, and Bryce Nelson placed third out of five athletes in the 5000 meters.
Jasmine Barnes placed fourth in the women’s 5000 meters with a time of 20:10.21. She now ranks second in the NSAA this season.
Up next: Valley City State will dual against the University of Jamestown on Friday. The dual will start at 3 p.m. at the Larson Center on the University of Jamestown campus. The Viking men and women both defeated Jamestown in last season’s dual.
