VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The VCSU men’s basketball team was looking for their first weekend sweep of the season as they were victorious last night against Waldorf. However, the hopes of a weekend sweep will have to wait as a strong first half from Viterbo saw the Vhawks score 50-points. Viterbo would come away with the win in the end over VCSU 89-66.

In the first half, the story is really more about what Viterbo did right more than what VCSU did wrong. Viterbo jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the ball game as Robert Cunitz scored the first 7 points of the game. Cunitz would have a strong first half scoring 11-points. Noah Frederickson would have a better first half for Viterbo as he finished with 14-points in the first half including an incredible 3-pointer as he was falling backwards with multiple defenders in his face and only a second left on the shot clock. Kevin Schramm for VCSU has a solid game as he showed great effort on both sides of the court. In a first half that saw Schramm collect 11-points, he just had a tone on him for this game where he wanted this win and was willing to do whatever it takes to get it done. At the break, Vhawks had a lead of 50-32.

Second half started out better for VCSU as they opened with a 5-0 run. However, that is where all the good for VCSU would stall. With Cunitz getting a bit cold in the second half, Viterbo got excellent shooting from Brady Polk. The Senior, who finished with 20-points would make shot after shot from anywhere on the court. At one point after hitting a huge 3-pointer to stop a VCSU run, Polk let the home crowd have it a bit, and credit to him when you make a big shot you deserve to gloat. The second half also saw Noah Frederickson continue to have a solid game for Viterbo. Just like Polk, Frederickson would stop any hope for VCSU by hitting shots.

In the end the match up for Viterbo against VCSU remained the same as this is the 7th consecutive victory for the Vhawks over the Vikings. Coach Montgomery joined the post game and was not happy with the result of the game, as you can imagine. With the loss the Vikings overall record goes to 14-10 and a conference record of 5-6. With only 3 regular season games remaining for VCSU, the road doesn’t get any easier and that’s exactly where they will be next Friday night. Vikings will travel to face Bellevue on February 11th in a huge NSAA match up.
