VALLEY CITY, N.D. (VCSUAthletics.com) – Adriana Torres scored a new career-high of 25 points to pace the Vikings to a 73-53 win over the Waldorf Warriors in a Friday night matchup.

After a slow start, the Vikings trailed 18-11 in the second quarter before going on a 19-point run to take the lead 30-18. Torres scored 11 points during the run and finished the first half with 17 points. After taking the lead in the second quarter, the Vikings never looked back, building their lead to as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter.

“I really just think the intensity of the team was the difference in the second quarter,” said VCSU assistant coach Taylor Henningsgard. “We talked a lot about it all week, putting pressure on the ball and denying and making it hard for them to score. We played really well defensively in the second quarter and that sparked some offense for us.”

Adriana Torres led the offense with 25 points and added three steals on the defensive end. Torres’ previous high of 24 points was set earlier this season at Dickinson State. Ashlyn Diemert scored 12 points and pulled down a team high of seven rebounds. Taryn Dieterle added eight points and six rebounds, followed by Allie Critchley with seven points.

VCSU improves to 9-11 on the season and 6-4 in the North Star Athletic Association. Waldorf falls to 6-16 on the season and 0-10 in the conference.

“The middle of the pack in our conference is really tight, so tomorrow against Viterbo is really important for where our seeding falls at the end of the year,” said Henningsgard. “We can control our own destiny to a home playoff game.”

VCSU shot 47 percent from the field (27-57), 31 percent from beyond the arc (6-19), and 72 percent free throws (13-18). Waldorf shot 36 percent from the field (21-58), 20 percent from beyond the arc (5-25), and 60 percent free throws (6-10). VCSU held the rebounding advantage 38-34 and forced 17 Waldorf turnovers.

The Warriors were led by Kayela Willis with 15 points, followed by Lindsay Fleld with nine. Sandra Christian pulled down a team-high six rebounds for the Warriors.
