OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornadoes pulled off a huge upset on senior night defeating #6 Linton/HMB on senior night by a final score of 64-61.

In the first quarter, both teams came out swinging relinquishing haymakers signaling for a fun, high-scoring game. Lady Lions senior guard Jaycee Richter led the way in the opening eight minutes with ten points. The Lady Lions rattled off a small run at the end of the quarter to lead 22-15. The second quarter started just how the first quarter did with lots of fast play and made shots. However, both teams hit a wall as they started turning the ball over and missing open shots. Oakes was able to outscore the Linton/HMB in the second quarter 11-9 which put them down 31-26 at the break.

The third quarter saw Oakes slowly clawing their way back into the game. The Tornadoes got more and more comfortable as the game progressed, and as a result, they knocked down some clutch three-pointers. With the game tied going into the fourth quarter, everyone in the building knew it was coming down to the final seconds, and it did.  The Tornadoes had the lead with 7.1 seconds left and the Lady Lions had the ball. The inbound was to Richter, but she was stopped at the top of the key, so she had to dish it off to senior point guard Teegan Scherr who had it poked away by Oakes senior guard Abby Cox. As a result, Scherr was unable to get a good shot off and the Tornadoes came away victorious.

The win finishes Oakes’ season with an impressive 12-7 record and 5-1 in district play. The District 5 Tournament begins from the Jamestown Civic Center on Friday as the Tornadoes play seventh-seeded Barnes County North who has not won a game this season. The game can be heard on KDDR 1220 AM/100.3 FM The Tornado, streamed online on newsdakota.com, and on The Tornado app. The whole tournament can also be heard on KQDJ-FM 101.1 FM Q101.
