Arthur (Art) Lawrence Anderson was born February 23, 1928, at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, ND to John and Mildred Anderson. He attended Rogers High School, graduating in 1946. Art married the love of his life, Ione Undem on February 9, 1951.
On November 2, 1950, Art was inducted into the United States Army, serving with the 196th Regimental Combat Team at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado. In August of 1951 the regimen departed Seattle, Washington for Haines, Alaska where he served with the 200th Engineer Company at Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska, where he and Ione lived until his military career ended in 1953.
Art and Ione moved to the family farmstead near Rogers where they started their family.
In addition to active grain farming, Art was one of North Dakota’s largest pork producers for many years. In later years, his passion became gardening. He had a love for designing and building things; there was nothing he could not fix, or a plant he could not grow.
Art passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Fargo, ND on January 28, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Ione, of 70 years, six children: Marty (Patricia) Anderson, Catherine (Jeff) Anderson, Scott (Kim) Anderson, Shawn (Linda) Anderson, Mitch (Dana) Anderson, Michele Berg; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Pat Porter and Sis Undem; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, his sister Jane and brother-in-law (Percy) Mohr, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Delphine (Bill) Brakke, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Elaine (Rod) Nevue; brothers-in-law Ken Porter, Larry Undem, and Danny Undem; and great-granddaughter Keira Wilkins.
The family would like to express our gratitude for the kindness, compassion and care shown by the Fargo VA Hospital staff throughout the years.
