COOPERSTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Oakes junior superstar guard Laikyn Roney broke the single-game scoring record with 39 points in the Tornadoes’ 71-41 win at Griggs-Midkota Monday night. The previous record was 35 points, which Roney broke in the three quarters with 37.

In the first half, Griggs-Midkota was unable to get back on defense and as a result, Roney was able to feast against the Titans defense with easy layups. Roney got 15 points in the first quarter including a pair of three-pointers. On the defensive side, Oakes was challenged by the length of Griggs-Midkota who has six players who are at least 5-foot-10. Senior forward Jenna Larson was almost unstoppable in the paint and kept the Titans in the game. Thanks to 22 first half points from Roney, Oakes led at the break 35-25.

The offense continued to pour it on for both Roney and the Tornadoes in the third quarter. Roney matched her first quarter total with 15 more points with senior guard Abby Cox joining in on the fun and making some jumpers. In the fourth quarter, the Tornadoes were starting to pull away and they pulled Roney with a few minutes to spare.

Roney finished the night 15-23 from the floor, 4-5 from the beyond the arc and 5-9 from the free throw line. Elsewhere, freshman guard Brianna Schmitz had eight points, and Abby Cox and junior forward Emma Muggli finished with seven apiece.

With the win, the Tornadoes stay undefeated in district play and advance to 3-0 with an overall record of 7-3. Their next test will be a home game against Sargent County on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
