VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Viper squirt team took to the road last weekend and picked up three wins to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Saturday afternoon the Vipers handled the May-Port Ice Dawgs, winning 8-4. May-Port would draw first blood scoring six minutes into the game, but Kaleb Hayes, notching his first goal of the seasons, would tie it up two minutes later (assist Beck Dietrich). Those would be the only two minutes the Vipers would trail all weekend. Kaysen Ziemba would add one in the first and they’d enter the second 2-2. Colton Gerlach, also scoring his first of the season, would add two goals in the second and Ziemba would add another to give the Vipers a 5-3 lead after two. The Ice Dawgs would score a quick one in the third but the Vipers would score the final three goals, Kalbrener twice unassisted and Ziemba (assist Gray Kasowski) for the 8-4 win. Ziemba finished with three goals; Gerlach with two goals; Kalbrener with two goals; Hayes with one goal. Dietrich and Kasowski recorded assists. Goaltender Tyler Olson recorded 23 saves in the game.
The Vipers were firing on all cylinders Sunday morning as they scored four first period goals, two from Gerlach and two from Kalbrener (assist Teagan Klevgaard), as they took on the West Fargo Stampede B1 Yellow. Kasowski would score to open the second (assist Ziemba), but WF would answer to bring it to 5-1. VC would quickly respond (Ziemba from Kasowski) to give the Vipers a 6-1 lead. The Stampede would make things interesting as they would score three in a row to bring it to 6-4. VC would score the final three however (Kasowski from Kalbrener, Ziemba from Kasowski and Gerlach from Dietrich) for the 8-4 victory. Gerlach would finish with three goals; Kasowski with two goals and two assists; Kalbrener and Ziemba each with two scores and an assist. Dietrich and Klevgaard were credited with assists. Olson faced 23 shots, turning away 19.
Sunday afternoon brought a matchup with Fargo Freeze B1 White. Kasowski would put VC up 1-0 seven minutes into the game (assist Ziemba) and Kalbrener would give them a 2-0 advantage four minutes into the second period. Fargo would add one in the second making it 2-1 after two. VC would get a cushion three minutes into the third (Kalbrener from Ziemba) but Fargo would score the next two to tie it 3-3 with eight minutes left in the game. With 1:49 left in the game Ziemba (assist Kalbrener) would put VC up 4-3 and 40 seconds later Kasowski would score an unassisted goal to solidify the 5-3 win. Kalbrener would finish with two goals and an assist; Kasowski would tally two goals; Ziemba would finish with a goal and two assists. Olson saved 27 of 30 shots on goal.
The Squirts will get back to action after the Holiday break when they travel to West Fargo on January 9.
