DICKINSON, N.D.– Mason Walters (SO/Jamestown, ND) had 33 points and nine rebounds to help lead the University of Jamestown men’s basketball team to a 93-69 season-opening win Thursday night over Dickinson State University.
Jamestown will travel to Presentation (S.D.) College on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
The Jimmies opened up a 20-7 lead after a Will Cordes (FR/Shakopee, MN) basket at the 12:49 mark, but the Blue Hawks would get within nine points just under four minutes later. John Argue (SO/Houston, TX) gave UJ its biggest lead of the half with a basket to make it 46-28.
Walters’ second bucket of the second half put Jamestown ahead by 17 and it looked like the Jimmies were easily in control. However, DSU went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:08 to cut the UJ lead to single digits.
A 7-0 Jimmie run pushed the lead back to 16 points, but the Blue Hawks answered with 13 of the next 17 points to trail by only seven with 8:09 remaining. Cordes knocked down a three to start a 18-5 run capped off by a Walters three-point play that put the game out of reach. Jamestown shot 19-of-33 in the second half, finishing 37-of-70 for the game.
Cordes and Marc Kjos (SO/Lake City, MN) each had 13 points and Devon Schultz (SR/Arlington, MN) had 11 points and six blocked shots. Cole Woodford (FR/Redwood Falls, MN) added nine points while Argue finished with six points and seven rebounds.
Bryce Knox led the Blue Hawks with 14 points, followed by John Evans with 13 and Ajdin Toskic with 12.
