OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – It was a rough senior night for the Oakes Tornadoes and hardly anything went right on either side of the ball. The Kindred Vikings were just too much to handle as they clinched a share of the Class B Southeast District title with a 47-13 win over Oakes.
The rout was on early as the Vikings got a pick-six on the first play from scrimmage. Oakes drove the ball down the field on their next drive, but failed to convert on a 4th and 5. That would be the highlight of the quarter as the Vikings scored on the following drive and forced a fumble and scored again to get up to a 21-0 lead after the first 12 minutes of action.
Kindred rolled out their junior backup quarterback Jorgen Swenson and he did not miss a beat. The Vikings relied a lot on their junior starting running back Trey Heinrich who ended the day with three rushing touchdowns.
The Oakes’ offense was unable to get much going with the exception of a dump-off pass to senior running back David Schmitz who took it to the house for a 67-yard touchdown. On that play, junior quarterback Xavier Vossler suffered an injury to his left knee and missed the rest of the game. Sophomore backup quarterback Trey Skoglund did his best to rally the troops, but it was too little too late. He was able to connect with sophomore wide receiver Blayson Dolney for a 25-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to up the team’s stats a bit.
It was a forgettable game overall for the Tornadoes and they’ll look forward to redeeming themselves next Friday at Sargent County. The winner of that game will make the playoffs. Oakes is now 4-2 in district play, Lisbon is also 4-2, and Sargent County is 3-3. Two of those three teams will make the playoffs.
