JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – Jamestown fell behind two sets to none on Thursday night and was unable to mount the comeback as the Jays lost to Bismarck St. Mary’s (28-26, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21) in WDA play.
A back and forth first set saw Jamestown arrive at set point on two separate occasions before the Saints rallied from behind to take set one 28-26 in overtime. It was a spread-out attack all night long for St. Mary’s who relied on Lydia Spies and Brooke Haas to do the bulk of the damage on offense. The Saints also made minimal mistakes from the service line whereas the Blue Jays ended the night with nine service errors.
Jamestown was led offensively by junior Bernadette Newman who posted a career-high 17 kills in the four-set loss. Haylie Hakanson and Hunter Petersen each finished the night with eight kills, and Katie Falk had seven more for the Blue Jays. In the middle, Annie Nabwe had three blocks and five kills. Katie Trumbauer and Aspyn Peterson both picked up two service aces.
The Blue Jays are now 12-4 on the season with a 6-3 WDA record, good for third place in the conference standings currently. Jamestown will host two matches next week on Tuesday and Thursday as Turtle Mountain and Minot both come to Jerry Meyer Arena. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 pm.
