LINTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Junior QB Xavier Vossler threw three touchdowns to three different receivers as the Tornadoes of Oakes defeat the Lions of Linton/Hazelton/Moffit/Braddock/Strasburg/Zeeland Friday night 32-13 in Class 11B Southeast action. Oakes improves to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the southeast, L-HMB/SZ drops to 2-4 overall and 0-4 in the southeast.
The Tornadoes started off quickly, getting a score with just a little over two minutes played in the first quarter. Senior David Schmitz picked off QB Trace King of the Lions and returned the interception for a 44-yard touchdown. The Lions would score a touchdown of their own with time winding down in the first quarter when Senior Fullback Dean Vetter rushed in from seven yards out with just under a minute remaining making the score locked at seven. Oakes scored three unanswered after Vetter’s TD, Vossler would go to work and connect with Noah Sundby for an 11-yard TD reception towards the end of the second quarter. In the second half, Vossler would find Blayson Dolney and Trey Skoglund for a 5-yard TD reception and a 9-yard TD reception respectively.
LHMBSZ would cut the gap to 12 after King connected with Jace Jochim for a 26-yard TD reception making the score 25-13 Oakes with 5:30 left in the fourth quarter. But the Tornadoes would put the game away roughly two minutes later when Schmitz ran in from 55-yards out. Unofficially, Schmitz carried the ball 19 times for 175 yards and one touchdown. Vossler was 13-23 passing for 158 yards and three TD’s. The Tornadoes defense picked off King four times and Vetter once for a total of five Lions turnovers.
