VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Fargo South came into Valley City with the same goal as the Hi-Liners, get the first win of the season. Both teams enduring losses in their first two games of the season.

First quarter, after the Hi-Liners were stopped on a 4th and 4 situation the Bruins got a 40-yard pass play from quarterback Kolby Nissen to wide receiver Jack Korbel to set up 1st and goal from the Valley City 8-yard line. A couple of plays later Nissen would complete the drive with the 1-yard touchdown rush to break the scoreless tie. Landon Docken would tack on the extra point to give Fargo South the 7-0 lead.

Second quarter, Senior Austin Shape would intercept a pass from Nissen and set up the Hi-Liners in great field position. Gavin Gerhardt would capitalize on the great field position by scoring a 1-yard rushing touchdown of his own to bring Valley City within one point. VC would go for 2 points, but a high snap ended the chances of the play being successful and with 8:41 left in the 2nd quarter the Bruins lead 7-6. After throwing an interception to Valley City’s Aiden Jacobson, Fargo South was bailed out by their defense to keep the lead. When the Bruins came back out on offense, Nissen tossed a perfect ball to wide receiver Jack Korbel 34-yards into the end zone, where Korbel made a great catch with his momentum carrying him in for the score. After the extra point the Bruins had a 14-6 lead. With 46 seconds left in the first half, Broden Muske picked off Nissen for the 3rd Hi-Liner interception of the quarter. After getting to the 6-yard line, QB Gavin Gerhardt would score his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time from 6 yards away. Again Valley City would go for 2 and again they would be unsuccessful and would trail at halftime 14-12.

Jumping ahead to the 4th quarter, Fargo South with possession and trying to run out the clock, Sophomore running back Dorian Sandness would rush for a 46-yard touchdown to put the Bruins up 21-12 with 3:27 remaining in the game. On the next offensive possession for the Hi-Liners, QB Gavin Gerhardt tossed a 77-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Miller to make it a 21-18 game. Valley City went for 2 for the third time and again would come away empty handed. Unfortunately for the Hi-Liners, on a 3rd down and 6 situation for the Bruins offense, Sandness picked up the first down and more with the 18-yard run to put the game away and give Fargo South the 21-18 victory. Despite the tough loss Hi-Liners Head Coach Scott Roehrich had this to say, “Our guys played extremely hard again tonight and we are extremely proud of the way they compete. Fargo South made a few more big plays then we did tonight, but our guys kept at it. We will continue to work and trust that the work pay off for us.”

Bruins improve to 1-2 on the season. Valley City drops to 0-3 on the year, and will be in action next Friday night on the road in Wahpeton with kickoff being at 7pm, and you can hear the call of the game on am1490-96.3fm KOVC.
