DICKINSON, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown High School football season kicked off with a bang on Friday night as the Blue Jays defeated Dickinson 19-7 in WDA action.
First Quarter: A back and forth defensive battle early on saw little offense as the jitters showed for both Jamestown and Dickinson until the end of the quarter. On the final play of the first quarter, Payton Hochhalter connected with Preston Kroeber on a 24-yard touchdown pass for the first Blue Jay score of the season. Adam Kallenbach recorded three receptions in the first quarter for 50 total yards, and Jamestown finished the first with 23 yards on the ground and 75 through the air.
Second Quarter: A muffed punt and a horsecollar tackle late in the second quarter provided Dickinson an excellent opportunity to score at the end of the first half. Immediately following the penalty, Midgets quarterback Troy Berg reached the end zone on a seven-yard rush to even the score at seven heading into the break. Hochhalter finished the first half 8-19 from the field with 108 yards passing, a touchdown, and an interception. The Blue Jays committed two turnovers and had six first downs.
Third Quarter: A big pass play from Hochhalter to Devin Beach for 44 yards late in the third put Jamestown in the Dickinson redzone before Kallenbach hauled in the second touchdown of the evening. A 10-yard reception marked the first touchdown of the year for the Jamestown senior. The Blue Jays went 75 yards in five plays to go ahead 13-7 after a blocked PAT.
Fourth Quarter: A huge conversion of 34 yards from Hochhalter to Kallenbach on fourth down with eight minutes to go in the game put the Jays back in the Dickinson redzone. Just two plays later, Jakob Schempp scored on a one-yard rush to cap an 11 play, 71-yard drive. Jamestown’s Aiden Braun picked off Dickinson to cap off a second-half shut out and grab the first win of the year for the Blue Jays.
Final Stats: Hochhalter 17-29, 257 yards, 2 TDs. Jakob Schempp 12 carries, 64 rush yards, TD. Kallenbach finished with over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown. Kroeber had the other Jamestown touchdown.
