JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The University of Jamestown has had their Department of Engineering for the last five years, giving students design challenges and real-world experiences along the way.

Department Chair Cherish Bauer-Reich has been with the engineering department since its inception.

Today, the department is seeking community sponsors to assist them with their senior Capstone process. Bauer-Reich says the purpose of the course is to synthesize technical knowledge gained during their mechanical engineering education in a real design application, such as a new product, device or process.

Bauer-Reich says sponsors will select a project for a student to complete. The student will then spend the semester providing a set of deliverables, alternative solution options, a prototype, and a final detailed design. All of this is completed at the University’s Schuler Engineering Lab with machining equipment.

Students who complete the course will gain valuable experience working on a project with real impacts as well as receive feedback from external stakeholders. Bauer-Reich says students then hear from a group of advisors at the end of the project to get feedback on their process and finished product.

If you’re interested in being a sponsor for a senior Capstone project, you can contact Dr. Katrina Christiansen at Katrina.christianse@uj.edu. Project selections will begin after the start of the semester, Forms are requested to be submitted before August 23rd.
