JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The National Buffalo Museum is pleased to feature three paintings by contemporary wildlife artist Elizabeth Mordensky through July 2022. These stunning large-scale pieces are currently gracing the museum’s lobby and gallery exit hallway.
Mordensky created these pieces specifically for these spaces using her unconventional technique of finger painting with oils.
“Mordensky’s work is a great fit for the museum,” National Buffalo Museum Executive Director Ilana Xinos said. “These spectacular pieces not only showcase her unique painting technique, but they also capture the attention of visitors and help to spark their curiosity about bison. We couldn’t ask for more.”
Mordensky has a passion for connecting people to the natural world. When she is not in the studio, Mordensky works as a wildlife guide in Yellowstone National Park, sharing the intimate experience of observing wildlife in nature with guests from around the world. She conceptualizes her pieces through a combination of long hours observing wildlife in the field, her photographs, which she uses as references to paint, and a little imagination.
Though she has been creating art since she was a small child, Mordensky only began finger painting in 2017. Her first finger-painting featured a bison, which remains her favorite subject.
Mordensky shares the National Buffalo Museum’s vision of conservation and restoration. The successful effort to save bison was one of the first times in history that humans stepped in to take action to remedy the devastation of a species on the brink of extinction.
Mordensky says, “Every time I see a bison in the wild, it serves as a beacon of hope that we can still take actions to conserve the natural world.”
Mordensky is passionate about using her art to assist conservation efforts.
