VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Parks & Recreation is excited to bring longtime, local music man, Myron Sommerfeld to the bandshell at the City Park Bandshell on Wednesday, July 21 at 7:15 pm. As part of the 25th Anniversary celebration Myron will be recognized for his contributions and dedication to the arts and music in Valley City.
Myron & The Music of the Stars orchestra has been bringing dance music to the area for many years. For years the band averaged 40 gigs a season, Labor Day through Mother’s Day!
Myron’s father started the band in 1929 and the family, including cousins, played gigs in small North Dakota towns during the winters. When his father left the band in 1956, Myron continued with his own instrumentation. His brother, Harley, still plays saxophone and clarinet.
Through the years the band has played all venues including ballroom dancing, barn dances, circus tents, cruise ships, churches & county fairs. They played the Governor’s Ball in Bismarck backed up by the famous Myron Floren and Guy & Rolna of the Lawrence Welk fame.
Myron and his wife, Jenneice, grew up in Valley City. They both taught … Jenneice taught 5th grade for 27 years and Myron taught K-12, including choir and instrumental for 29 ½ years. Myron once wrote a song, “Stepping Out to Go Dancing,” which was selected as the theme song for the National Ballroom Operators Association.
Plan to come out for the evening…. Bring your family & lawn chairs and enjoy the evening with neighbors & friends! A freewill offering is taken each night for the continued support of the City Park Bandshell.
