JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown High School Theater has planned an exciting return to the stage this Thursday and Friday with their production of the musical “Newsies” June 24th & 25th.

The 1992 movie turned Broadway show is inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. Co-director Cheryl McIntyre says they have 28 actors and a live pit orchestra for the show.

Actor Ian Weis plays the part of Davey, the brains behind the strike.

Weis says he’s excited to play a different role than he has in the past, where he has typically added the comic relief.

With many different roles in the show, McIntyre says some students have been tasked with multiple parts. One of those actors is Monica Ripplinger, who plays the part of Pulitzer’s Secretary and also a part of the Newsies crew.

When she’s not preparing for her multiple roles, Ripplinger has also taken on a public relations position to help promote the show around the area.

McIntyre added they’ve also cast some alumni to play a role in the musical, so the audience may recognize some names in the show and in the orchestra.

She pointed out that a lot of the senior students have stepped up in their roles, preparing weeks ahead of time before rehearsals began. She says the show is full of musical numbers, dancing, and a great story.

Tickets for the show are $5 for students and $7 for adults and can be purchased at the door. Both performances begin at 7 PM each night at the Jamestown High School Theater.
