JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Fort Seward Historic Site is gearing up for their 149th year this summer.

Fort Seward was in operation from 1872 to 1877. Men who served there oversaw the building of the railroad through Jamestown. Today, it is the starting point for the Fort Seward Annual Wagon Train, as well as the host for the annual Big Guns of the Old West event.

Site Supervisor Jennie Marks says volunteers and more have been helping prepare the site for the summer season.

Marks says with the help of local entities, they’re able to have some camper sites that can be used this year.

The Fort also offers a unique camping experience with their authentic “glamping” choice for visitors, adding they even had the option for visitor to “dress up” using historically accurate clothing from the 1800’s.

Ahead, Marks says they have plans to return the popular Big Guns of the Old West during Buffalo Days in July. She pointed out they will have the demonstrations on two days this year to allow everyone a chance to see them.

The local Boy Scouts Troop will also be hosting a flag retiring ceremony on May 23rd at 10 AM at the Fort. Marks says anyone who wants to retire a flag can drop it off at the Jamestown Tourism Office. The public is welcome to attend.
