CRETE, NE. (NewsDakota.com) – The University of Jamestown baseball team struggled to produce runs against the pitching staff of Mount Marty on Thursday afternoon as the Lancers came from behind to win 4-2 at Doane.
The Jimmies first run came in the third inning after Chase Hacker started the frame with a single. After Hacker was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Rice, Grant Okawa singled back up the middle into center field to score Hacker. Jamestown’s only other run was produced in the ninth inning off a Luke Shekeyrk single into center.
Senior Dru Fitz pitched seven solid frames but continued into the eighth inning and that is when Mount Marty put up all four of its runs. The Lancers led off the inning with a single and a walk before a throwing error off of a steal attempt tied the game at one. Mount Marty would take the lead in the same at-bat as Billy Hancock homered over the left-field fence. Fitz would be replaced after going 7+ and allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
Mount Marty tacked on an additional run in the eighth off of Cameron Jenkins after Collin Muth hit a solo home run. Jamestown got out of the inning following that but the damage had already been done and the Jimmies were unable to come back in the ninth.
Jamestown fell to 28-22 on the year and 0-1 in the GPAC tournament. The Jimmies will now play the loser of Doane and Northwestern on Friday at 12 pm.
