JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – The University of Jamestown softball team won its third and fourth straight games on Tuesday afternoon as the Jimmies defeated Dakota Wesleyan 5-1 and 9-0.
The Tigers got on the board first in game one in the third inning, but pitcher Katie Merchant worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the damage at just one run in the third. Jamestown would respond in a big way in the bottom half of the inning.
With one down in the third, Mariah Wick singled into center and Morgan Geiszler followed up with another single for Jamestown. Jenna Remenar reached base on a walk to the load the bases, and a wild pitch scored Wick for the first run of the game. After a Kassi Ward walk, Sydney Prussia flew out to right field to bring up Santina Zito with two down and the bases loaded. Zito delivered in a big way, clearing the bases with a double into the right center gap to put the Jimmies up for good. The sophomore from Boise now leads Jamestown in RBIs this season with 37.
Katie Merchant earned the win in the circle in the first game for UJ, going five innings and allowing just one earned run. Kat Miska worked two hitless innings in relief for the Jimmies, striking out two Tiger batters.
The offense picked up for the Jimmies in game two as Gracie Fischer brought in two runs and Sydney Prussia and Geiszler each hit homers late. Jamestown scored three runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third, and three more in the fourth off of two Dakota Wesleyan pitchers. Remenar, Wick, and Zito all had RBIs in game two.
Lucy Sinkkonen threw the complete game shutout, going five innings and allowing four hits while striking out one. Sinkkonen is now 3-3 on the year as the Jimmies improve to 31-11 on the season and sit in third in the GPAC. #11 Morningside comes to Trapper Field on Saturday to round out the regular season with a doubleheader.
