SIOUX CITY, IA. (NewsDakota.com) – The #1 University of Jamestown women’s volleyball team was forced to battle back on Tuesday morning as the Jimmies rallied from down 2-1 in the match to defeat Viterbo (25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-13) in five sets.

Viterbo and Jamestown traded points back-and-forth throughout the entirety of set one before Anna Holen finished off the set one win with a kill from Jackie Meiklejohn. The Jimmies had trailed 21-20 at the tail end of the first set.

The V-Hawks responded by taking sets two and three by the same score, 25-19. Jamestown was held to a .114 attack percentage during the third set and the Jimmies had their backs against the wall going into set four.

UJ traded points with Viterbo early in the fourth set before rattled off a four-point run in the middle of the fourth set behind kills from Anna Holen and Kalli Hegerle. The Jimmies forced a fifth and final decisive set with the V-Hawks after Hegerle wrapped up the fourth set with another kill.

It was the Hegerle show early and often in set five for Jamestown, as the junior scored the first three points to go up 3-0 in the match. Viterbo would battle back to tie the fifth set at 12 before the Jimmies took three out of the last four points to win the opening game of pool play. Freshman Cassidy Spies recorded a service error to end the match.

Hegerle finished with 23 total kills, a new career-high. The West Fargo native hit .512 for the match and also collected three digs and three blocks. Corina Huff and Taylor Sabinash each ended the morning with 10 kills for the Jimmies, and Meiklejohn and Megan Gaffaney combined for 61 assists in five sets. Sydney Ellingson tallied 29 digs and A. Holen wrapped up her morning with nine kills and 18 digs.

The Jimmies will return to the Tyson Events Center tomorrow at 10:30 am when they take on the University of Providence. The Argos begin pool play today at 2 pm against Viterbo in Sioux City.
