VALLEY CITY, N.D. (vcsuvikings.com) – The Valley City State softball team expanded its win streak to nine games with a three-game sweep over Waldorf Saturday.
The Vikings totaled eight home runs in the three-game series. Four different Vikings homered to take the opening game 8-4. Junior Riley Perryman then homered twice in a 7-4 victory in game two. Finally, Makenzee Stone and Sierra Crocker each homered to combine for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take game three by mercy rule, 9-0.
Valley City State improves to 26-5 overall this season and 19-2 in the NSAA. Waldorf drops to 8-25 overall and 6-17 in the conference.
UP NEXT: The Vikings and Warriors have canceled the fourth game of the series due to Sunday’s weather forecast. Valley City State travels to Mayville State on Wednesday, April 28, for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
VCSU 8, Waldorf 4
Makenzee Stone, Sierra Crocker, Riley Perryman and Anne-Elise Gest each recorded solo home runs to put up half of VCSU’s runs in Saturday’s opener. Gest also added an RBI double, and Autumn Perry and Jessica Husband each contributed RBI singles. Marissa Hawkins scored on a sac fly from Perryman to round out the scoring for VCSU.
Joelle Lamontagne started in the circle and worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four. Emily Smith pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and got the win in the circle, striking out five batters.
Perry, Gest and Stone each recorded two hits in the game. Gest finished with two RBIs and Stone scored two runs for the Vikings.
Waldorf’s Kassidy Elyea hit a two-run homer paired with a pair of Viking errors to allow the Warriors’ four runs in the game. Alex Mathers got the loss for Waldorf, allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits and striking out three.
VCSU 7, Waldorf 4
The Warriors scored all four of its runs in the top of the fifth inning to come from behind and lead 4-3. Makenzee Stone drove in the tying run with a single down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth. Riley Perryman then followed with a three-run blast over the centerfield fence to seal the 7-4 victory.
Amber Stewart got the win after starting in the circle and working 6 innings. She walked two and struck out five. Emily Smith picked up her first save of the season after pitching an inning in relief.
Perryman, Autumn Perry and Anne-Elise Gest each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Perryman finished with four RBIs on two home runs in the game. Sierra Crocker and Stone each added an RBI for the Vikings.
Sophie Gil led the Warriors at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run. Bre Bouse got the loss for Waldorf, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits and walking two.
VCSU 9, Waldorf 0 (5 innings)
The series finale was all VCSU as Stone and Crocker each hit their second home runs of the day to finish the game in just five innings. Senior pitcher Emily Smith also allowed just one hit and struck out seven batters in her 16th win of the season.
The Vikings put up a pair of runs in the second inning on a passed ball and an RBI single from Autumn Perry. A sac fly from Andrea Rodriguez scored Riley Perryman in the fourth to put VCSU ahead 3-0.
The Vikings then scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the win by mercy rule. Marissa Hawkins drove in Anne-Elise Gest with an RBI double followed by Stone with a two-run homer to put the Vikings up 6-0. Perryman then reached on a single and Perry followed with a walk. Sierra Crocker then finished the game with a walk-off blast over the centerfield fence to take the 9-0 win.
Riley Perryman and Autumn Perry each went 2-for-2 at the plate. Perryman scored three runs and Stone added two runs and two RBIs for VCSU.
Kourtney Smith got the loss for Waldorf, allowing nine runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out one. Katie Chapman got Waldorf’s only hit of the game.
