Olaf Sminesvik, 93, Valley City, North Dakota passed away April 3, 2021 at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.
Olaf Arthur Ernest Sminesvik was born September 7, 1927 in Maddock, North Dakota to Ole and Rachael (Muri) Sminesvik. He attended school until the 8th grade and then began working on farms near Harlow, North Dakota until moving to Chicago where he became a machinist. He married Louise Watkins in 1957 and made their home in Minneapolis, raising three children. Olaf continued to work as a machinist until his retirement in 1983. He married Elsie Knutson Anderson in September of 1983 in Minneapolis and made their home in Kathryn, North Dakota and later in Litchville, North Dakota.
Olaf is survived by his three children, Mark (Carmon), Crystle, Minnesota, Mary (Daniel) Peterson, Lisbon, North Dakota, and Rachel Buttonoff, Bemidji, Minnesota; two sisters, Gladys Owens, Fargo and Ruth Knudson, Hillsboro, North Dakota; seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great grandson; four stepchildren, Kailash (Indra) Dhaksinamurthi, Tim (Priscilla) Anderson, Susan Anderson and Beth (Dennis) Gartner along with all their families.
He was preceded in death by three brothers Harold, Olaf Robert and Norman; three sisters Jeannie, Margaret and Mary; his wife Elsie and his parents.
A memorial service will be held 2 pm Thursday, April 8, 2021 at First Reformed Church, Litchville. Inurnment will be in the Litchville Cemetery. Facemask will be required at the funeral.
