Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornado boys’ basketball team hosted the Carrington Cardinals on Tuesday night and were not very gracious hosts, dominating the game for a 65-31 victory on Parents’ Night.  The game was close for most of the first quarter, but the Tornadoes were able to stretch the lead to seven at the end of the quarter before opening things up to take a 39-14 lead into halftime.

The second half was mainly a case of playing out the string, as the Tornadoes took a 34-point lead into the fourth.  The win means that the Tornadoes will finish the regular season with a 4-2 record in District 5, although the season continues into the last week of February with non-district games.

Senior Garret Meehl found foul trouble in the first quarter as he picked up two quick fouls, but the Tornadoes seemed to only pick up steam after Meehl took a seat for most of the rest of the half.  Fellow seniors Steele Hansen and Dalton Schmit finished with 14 and eight first half points, respectively, and Meehl bookended his time sitting with a pair of three-pointers, while also scoring eight in the first half.

Hansen led all scorers with 18, and Meehl made five three-pointers on his way to 17 points.  Schmit finished with 11, and fellow senior Ashton Biesterfeld finished with 10.  Sophomore Hudson Schmitz finished with 10 points for the Cardinals, while freshman Grady Shipman added eight.

The Tornadoes’ next action will be on Saturday when they take on Maple Valley.  Their next game on KDDR 1220 am/95.9 fm will be next Tuesday when they travel to Lisbon.
